DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this Sept 11 screening of Never Happen Here: the Whitehorse 9/11 Story and hear\, for the first time ever Al Lucier speak of his experience on the day. \nAllan Lucier is a retired RCMP office.  On September 11\, 2001 Allan was responsible for RCMP communications which extended from local updates to interactions with the North America Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).  In this capacity Allan provided vital information to the Whitehorse Public and maintained active and open channels with the decisions makers of the day.  This “inside the operations” perspective will provide a unique window into the events in Whitehorse. Since 911\, Allan and his family have lived in BC and Ontario\, and now reside again here in Whitehorse.

DESCRIPTION:These completed watercraft will be on display in YTM’s Main Gallery. \n. \nFor countless generations we – the Indigenous peoples of the North – have used the resources of our rugged homeland for food\, shelter\, clothing\, tools\, inspiration and meaning\, always passing on knowledge to our descendants. People adapted in each place to camp\, hunt\, fish and gather materials for every need. Teslin Elder Virginia Smarch said our old people were “part of the land and part of the water.” Their life ways were self sufficient and sustainable over thousands of years. \nIn this vast land of long winters and short summers\, travel was essential. Our ancestors were curious\, ingenious and industrious – finding materials\, experimenting with designs and honing their skills to build transport for food and families across ocean waters\, fast flowing rivers and deep lakes. \nOur cultures were overtaken by colonization in the centuries following first contact with newcomers. We persevered in reclaiming our lands\, autonomy and cultures. Today 11 of 14 Yukon First Nations are self-governing\, exploring new pathways to sustainable prosperity. \nResilient and resourceful Elders survived tough times\, preserving our languages and cultures. Honouring them we are building four watercraft ~ a moose skin boat\, birch bark canoe\, dugout canoe and quyaq ~ for Canada’s 150th anniversary. Like the watercraft of earlier days we have arrived at a new destiny – a place of pride and celebration as independent Indigenous peoples. It is in this spirit that we join with other Canadians – young and old\, new arrivals and long time settlers\, to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. \nDań Kwanje ’Á–Nààn: Voices Across the Water carries messages for all of us and for people around the world. DESCRIPTION:Dogs! featuring Frank Turner & John Firth \nFrank Turner grew up in Toronto and graduated with a Master’s of Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University. In 1973 he lost a coin flip and instead of going to Mexico he ended up in the Yukon. He built a cabin on Squatters Road and his pet dog\, Cheeko ended up getting pregnant which led Frank down a sled dog path that included competing in 24 Yukon Quests\, becoming (and still) the only Canada-born musher to win the race. He also travelled to Siberia in 1991 and has travelled frequently on the Arctic Ocean. \nJohn Firth is an award winning author of five books on Yukon sport and recreation. He will talk about the many roles that dog mushing has played in Yukon transportation history and tradition – including delivering mail\, catching the bad guys and pilfering kegs of beer from the local pub – as well as the history of dog powered sport in the territory – including the characters of the Rendezvous races when they were the centerpiece of the end of winter celebrations. \n\nJoin our elders and storytellers as they share tales about life in the Yukon on foot\, with dogs and horses\, planes\, trains and automobiles – even their thoughts about the future. DESCRIPTION:Bikes! featuring Peter Hebink & Ewa Dembek \nPeter Heebink is an avid cyclist who has explored all things related to cycling in the Yukon and abroad. He will share some of his adventures of road bike racing\, mountain biking\, and winter fat biking in the Yukon as well as sharing some of his favorite destinations in the world for cycle touring and different ways to do it. \nEwa is a Yukon adventurer whose travels have taken her trekking across the Canadian high arctic\, climbing up the slopes of Africa’s Mt. Kilimanjaro and kayaking over Alaskan waters on the Pacific coast. Her latest expedition was inspired by a deeply personal family story – the forced deportation of her mother from Poland during WWII.   Ewa will share some general information on why bicycles are the perfect slow travel vehicle\, while highlighting some of her experiences on the 8000 km trip from Poland through Central Asia and into Iran. \nJoin our elders and storytellers as they share tales about life in the Yukon on foot\, with dogs and horses\, planes\, trains and automobiles – even their thoughts about the future.
