2020 Host/Interpreter

Project & Job Objectives:

The Host Interpreter ensures positive visitor experience, must be accurate in handling of money and transactions, is responsible for inclusive and engaging tours and public interactions, and performs cleaning and light maintenance. This position reports to the Operations Manager. As Host Interpreter, you will assist the museum in engaging its visitors and promote heritage within the community. You are an extremely valuable part of the Museum and Heritage experience. Your oral and written interpretative skills, creativity, outgoing and friendly attitude, as well as organizational and time management skills will come in handy.

These positions are for up to a 16 week duration with a start date of May 11th and an end date of August 31st. Language of work is primarily in English, but knowledge of French, Yukon Indigenous languages, German, or Japanese would be an asset.

Come and spend the summer learning about Yukon history and engaging our friendly visitors.

Tours Tasks:

-Conduct scheduled and informal tours.

-Request information sources and find information with self-direction.

-Continually asks why and how; work to find answers.

Gift Shop Tasks:

-Greet visitors in a friendly manner.

-Provide information and answer questions as needed for visitors.

-Process admissions, gift shop purchases, and memberships accurately, using an electronic till and card machine.

-Ensure tidiness and cleanliness of front entry and gift shop.

-Conduct inventory checks as assigned by the Operations Manager.

Additional Tasks include:

-Assisting with events and rentals.

-Assist with routine museum cleaning (inside and outside).

-Assist with other projects as assigned.

-Paid training may be scheduled outside of regular shifts (First Aid, WHMIS, etc.).

Required:

1. English speaking. French, Yukon Indigenous language (Tutchone, Inuit, Tlingit, Han, Tahltan, Gwich’in, Kaska, …), Japanese, or German as a first or second language would be an asset.

2. Good knowledge of Yukon history and geography (or willing to learn).

3. Ability to lift 20 lbs and to stand for sustained periods.

4. Legally entitled to work in Canada. Criminal record check required.

5. Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 30.
